Top 5 Things to Know About LEED Homes

After taking a year of blogging about getting our home LEED certified, and writing about every minute detail, I wanted to share some key findings.  (I am also working on a comprehensive eBook on the costs and benefits of LEED Homes.  It will be available on this website; stay tuned!)

  1. There are 18 prerequisites across eight sections in the rating system.  You have to dig through each section of LEED Homes Reference Guide to find them (though I pull them out in my upcoming eBook).  The important thing to know is that you have to meet all 18 of them — they are not optional.  You cannot get your home LEED certified if you miss just one of them.

Now that we finally are LEED Gold Certified, a lot of people have asked me how we got the points to get to the gold level.  As a quick recap, LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design, a rating system developed by the U.S. Green Building Council to define and measure “green” buildings.   LEED for Homes is a national, voluntary certification system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes and encourages the adoption of sustainable practices by the homebuilding industry.  The LEED for Homes Rating System is built around eight categories of sustainable design:
